OBD-II fault code

P2B95: Cold Start Injection Pulse Performance

What it means

During cold start, the ECM detects that the overall injection pulse performance does not match the calibrated cold-start strategy. Combustion stability is reduced during warm-up.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

During a cold start, the ECM adjusts injector pulse operation to stabilize combustion while the engine warms. P2B95 sets when the overall injection-pulse performance during that phase does not match the calibrated strategy, which can result from injectors delivering uneven flow or fuel-rail pressure changing during injection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injectors aged - flow drift across cylinders
  2. Fuel rail pressure drifts during pulse

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or uneven running after a cold start
  • Engine may hesitate during warm-up
  • Increased exhaust smoke or fuel odor

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data at a cold start and note engine temperature, rough-running conditions, and any stored fuel-pressure or misfire codes before clearing anything.
  2. Use live data during a cold start to compare commanded and measured fuel-rail pressure as the roughness occurs.
  3. Inspect for fuel leaks and check the injector connectors and wiring for damage or poor contact.
  4. Compare cylinder balance or injector contribution data during cold operation, if supported, to look for uneven injector flow.
  5. Test injector delivery and fuel-rail pressure behavior against the manufacturer's specification before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged injector connector or wiring fault found during inspection.
  • Correct a fuel-rail pressure control or supply fault if pressure drifts during cold-start injection.
  • Service or replace injectors that fail flow or balance testing.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs roughly after a cold start, avoid hard acceleration until it smooths out and the fault is diagnosed. Persistent uneven combustion can increase emissions and fuel use; stop driving if the engine misfires severely, stalls, or produces heavy smoke.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
