OBD-II fault code

P2B93: Wastegate Position Sensor A Exceeded Learning Limit

What it means

The required adaptation offset for the wastegate position sensor A exceeds the calibrated learning window. Sensor or mechanism out of nominal range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate position sensor A reports the position of the wastegate mechanism so the ECM can control and adapt turbocharger boost. P2B93 sets when the adjustment needed to align sensor A's reported position with the learned range exceeds the ECM's permitted limit, indicating a shifted mechanism end-stop or sensor-reference drift.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mechanical wear shifted end-stops
  2. Sensor reference drifted

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power
  • Weak acceleration or slower turbo response

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan live wastegate A position and boost-related data to see whether the commanded and reported positions disagree.
  2. Inspect sensor A, its connector, linkage, and wastegate mechanism for looseness, damage, binding, or visible wear at the end-stops.
  3. With the engine off and following the vehicle's safety procedures, check whether the wastegate mechanism moves freely through its intended range.
  4. Check sensor A wiring and connector for damage or poor contact that could make its position reference unreliable.
  5. Compare sensor A's reported position and the mechanism's range with the manufacturer's specification, then perform any specified learning procedure after correcting a mechanical or sensor fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair or free a binding wastegate mechanism, if permitted by the manufacturer's service procedure.
  • Repair loose or damaged sensor A wiring and connector terminals.
  • Replace a worn wastegate mechanism or end-stop components as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Replace wastegate position sensor A if its reference has drifted beyond specification, then carry out the specified learning procedure.

Can I keep driving?

Reduced power and slow turbo response can make merging or overtaking unsafe; avoid hard acceleration, high speeds, and towing. Have the fault assessed promptly, since incorrect wastegate control can worsen boost problems and may leave the vehicle in reduced-power mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
