What it means
The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the exhaust side of bank 2 reports a circuit low condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The position sensor B on the exhaust cam actuator for bank 2 sends cam position feedback to the engine control module. This code sets when the sensor circuit signal is too low, so the module cannot reliably determine exhaust cam phasing on bank 2.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and compare live bank 2 exhaust sensor B readings with the commanded cam position.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector and harness for a signal wire touching ground, damaged insulation, corrosion, or loose terminals.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor reference or supply and ground, then test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open.
- Disconnect the sensor as specified by service information and check whether the low signal remains in the harness circuit.
- If the circuit is intact, test sensor B on the bank 2 exhaust actuator against the manufacturer's specification for an internal short.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 2 connector terminals.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or an open circuit.
- Replace the internally shorted bank 2 exhaust actuator position sensor B.
- Clear the code and verify that the signal responds as commanded.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently and avoid high rpm because bank 2 exhaust cam phasing feedback may be unreliable, causing power loss or rough running. Stop if stalling or severe roughness occurs, since the engine may become unsafe to maneuver.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
