OBD-II fault code

P2B4C: B Camshaft Position Actuator Position Sensor B Range/Performance Bank 2

What it means

The position sensor B of the camshaft position actuator on the exhaust side of bank 2 reports a range/performance condition. Cam phasing position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Position sensor B tracks the exhaust cam actuator on bank 2. The control module checks whether the reported position stays within a plausible range and follows commanded cam movement; this code means the reading is implausible or does not respond as expected, rather than simply being identified as a high or low circuit signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Actuator mechanism worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded versus measured bank 2 exhaust cam position across the operating conditions captured when the fault set.
  2. Check live data for sensor B on bank 2 for a reading that is stuck, offset, erratic, or slow to follow commands.
  3. Inspect the bank 2 exhaust actuator sensor and its connector and harness for damage or poor contact that could distort the reading.
  4. Check engine oil level and condition, then inspect the bank 2 actuator mechanism for binding or wear using the vehicle's service information.
  5. Test sensor output and actuator movement against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish sensor drift from a worn or sticking mechanism.

Common fixes

  • Correct low or degraded engine oil if it is affecting actuator movement, using the specified oil.
  • Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at bank 2 sensor B.
  • Replace sensor B if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
  • Repair or replace the bank 2 exhaust cam actuator mechanism if it binds or fails to track commands.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid high engine load and hard acceleration because bank 2 exhaust cam timing may not track commands, reducing power and increasing fuel use. If rough idle or stalling develops, limit driving and stop if the engine cannot run reliably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
