What it means
The clutch A actuator motor exceeds the calibrated maximum speed. Load on the motor unexpectedly low or rotor position offset.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The clutch A actuator motor positions clutch A during transmission shifts, while its rotor position sensor lets the transmission control module (TCM) track motor movement. P28C9 sets when the motor turns faster than its calibrated maximum, which can happen if its mechanical load is lost or the reported rotor position is offset.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Mechanical load lost (broken coupling)
- Rotor position sensor offset
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and use transmission live data to compare commanded clutch A motor movement with its reported speed and position.
- With the vehicle safely parked and the ignition off, inspect the clutch A actuator and its drive coupling for disconnection, damage, or signs that the motor is no longer moving the clutch mechanism.
- Inspect the clutch A rotor position sensor connector and wiring for loose pins, damage, or poor seating that could make reported position inaccurate.
- Use a scan tool to check whether the clutch A position signal changes smoothly and plausibly as the actuator moves, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the coupling and wiring are intact, test the rotor position sensor and actuator alignment against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or secure a loose clutch A actuator coupling.
- Repair damaged or loose rotor position sensor wiring or connector pins.
- Correct clutch A rotor position sensor alignment if it is offset.
- Replace a failed clutch A rotor position sensor or actuator after testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission is stuck in one gear; the vehicle may lose drive or shift unpredictably. If it must be moved, keep the trip short and avoid heavy traffic or steep grades.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
