OBD-II fault code

P288B: Park Lock/Pawl Actuator Circuit Performance

What it means

The park lock or pawl actuator does not engage or release within the calibrated time window. Mechanical resistance or weakened actuator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The park lock or pawl actuator must move the transmission parking mechanism promptly when Park is selected or released. P288B sets when the control module detects that engagement or release takes longer than its calibrated time window, pointing to slow actuator response or mechanical resistance.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Increased friction in lock mechanism
  2. Actuator force degraded

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light on
  • Difficulty shifting into or out of Park
  • Park position may not engage or release as expected

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review actuator command and response timing to determine whether engagement or release was delayed.
  2. With the vehicle secured, note whether Park selection is consistently slow or difficult and whether the fault occurs when engaging or releasing.
  3. Inspect the actuator connector and wiring for poor connections, corrosion, or damage that could weaken actuator operation.
  4. Check transmission fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure if the actuator uses the fluid system.
  5. If the electrical supply is sound, test actuator response and inspect the park mechanism for friction, binding, or wear.

Common fixes

  • Repair a poor actuator connector or damaged wiring that is slowing its response.
  • Correct fluid level or condition if the manufacturer's procedure indicates it affects actuation.
  • Repair binding or excessive friction in the park lock mechanism.
  • Replace a weakened actuator if testing confirms it cannot move the mechanism within specification.

Can I keep driving?

Use the parking brake and allow extra care when selecting Park; do not assume the vehicle is secured until the position is confirmed. If the mechanism sticks or the vehicle can roll, stop using it and arrange repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
