OBD-II fault code

P2888: Park Lock/Pawl Actuator Circuit/Open

What it means

The control wiring of the park lock or pawl actuator is open. No current flows when the actuator is commanded.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The park lock or pawl actuator circuit carries the control signal and current needed to move the transmission parking mechanism. P2888 sets when the control module detects an open circuit, so expected current does not flow when it commands the actuator.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in actuator control wire
  2. Open actuator coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light on
  • Difficulty shifting into or out of Park
  • Park position may not engage or release as expected

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check related transmission codes to confirm the fault occurred during a Park command.
  2. Secure the vehicle, then inspect the actuator connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, loose fit, or water intrusion.
  3. Trace the actuator control wiring for breaks, chafing, or damaged sections that could interrupt continuity.
  4. With power isolated as directed by the manufacturer's service information, test continuity through the control wire and actuator coil.
  5. If the harness and coil show continuity, check the control module connector and output path for an open.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or repair a pushed-back or damaged connector pin.
  • Repair an open or broken actuator control wire.
  • Replace the actuator if its coil is open.
  • Repair an open in the control module connector or output circuit if testing locates it there.

Can I keep driving?

Do not count on Park to secure the vehicle while this fault is active; apply the parking brake and use level ground. If Park will not engage or release reliably, avoid driving until the fault is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
