OBD-II fault code

P2889: Park Lock/Pawl Actuator Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the park lock/pawl actuator control circuit is below the expected range. The code identifies a circuit condition; it does not by itself identify the failed component.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The park lock or pawl actuator circuit drives the mechanism that holds the transmission in Park. P2889 sets when the control module detects voltage below the expected range on that control circuit; the low reading identifies an electrical condition, not a failed part by itself.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Control wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in actuator coil
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light on
  • Difficulty shifting into or out of Park
  • Park position may not engage or release as expected

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check related transmission codes to determine whether the low reading occurred during an actuator command.
  2. Inspect the actuator connector and harness for a wire shorted to ground, corrosion, moisture, or damaged insulation.
  3. Check battery and charging system condition if other low-voltage codes are present, since system voltage can affect circuit readings.
  4. Using the manufacturer's wiring diagram, measure the actuator circuit during a command and compare it with the specified range.
  5. If the harness is sound, test the actuator coil and connector contact resistance, then check the control module output.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector pins and restore a sound connection.
  • Replace the actuator if testing confirms an internal coil short.
  • Repair the control module output circuit if measurements locate the fault there.

Can I keep driving?

Use the parking brake and do not trust Park to hold the vehicle if engagement is inconsistent. Avoid driving if the transmission cannot reliably enter or leave Park, since the actuator may fail to secure or release the parking mechanism.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
