What it means
The output driver for the engine disconnect clutch actuator reports current or junction temperature above its protection threshold. Sustained high load on the actuator or short-circuit fault.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The engine disconnect clutch actuator driver is the control module output stage that supplies current to move the clutch actuator. P288C sets when that driver detects excessive current or its own temperature exceeds its protection threshold, which can result from wiring shorted to ground or an actuator stalled by a jammed clutch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Short to ground in actuator wiring
- Actuator mechanically jammed — high stall current
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check related hybrid or transmission codes to see when the actuator driver current or temperature rose.
- Inspect the clutch actuator harness and connectors for chafing, pinched insulation, corrosion, or a short to ground.
- Review scan-tool data for actuator commands and driver current or temperature, if the vehicle provides it, and note whether the fault follows a particular command.
- With the system safely isolated according to the manufacturer's service information, test the actuator wiring for shorts and the actuator for an internal fault.
- If the electrical circuit checks out, assess whether the actuator or clutch mechanism is binding and causing the actuator to stall.
Common fixes
- Repair actuator wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose actuator connector pins.
- Replace a faulty actuator if testing confirms excessive current draw.
- Repair a jammed clutch or mechanism that is forcing the actuator to stall.
- Replace or repair the control module driver only after the wiring and actuator have passed checks.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid repeated engine-to-hybrid transitions, hard acceleration, and towing because the actuator driver may shut down and cause poor shifting or limp mode. Stop if the drivetrain behaves unpredictably; continued high current can damage the driver or actuator.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
