OBD-II fault code

P286C: Clutch A Pressure Disengagement Too High

What it means

Clutch A disengagement pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum. The clutch may not separate cleanly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Clutch A must release to separate engine torque from the transmission during a shift, and the control module monitors hydraulic pressure during disengagement. This code sets when clutch A disengagement pressure exceeds its calibrated maximum, which may prevent the clutch from separating cleanly.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Pressure regulator stuck at high output
  2. Control solenoid characteristic drift

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded and measured clutch A pressure during disengagement to verify the excessive reading occurs as the clutch releases.
  2. Note whether the transmission drags, shifts harshly, or struggles to change gear when clutch A should disengage.
  3. Inspect clutch A solenoid wiring and connectors for corrosion, loose pins, or damage that could interfere with pressure control.
  4. Check transmission fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer's procedure and look for other hydraulic control codes.
  5. Test the pressure regulator and clutch A control solenoid during disengagement against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Correct fluid level or condition if it does not meet the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair corroded connectors or damaged wiring serving the clutch A control solenoid.
  • Repair or replace the pressure regulator if it maintains excessive output during disengagement.
  • Replace or recalibrate the clutch A control solenoid if testing confirms drift.

Can I keep driving?

Keep driving to a minimum because excess pressure while clutch A should release can cause dragging, harsh shifts, and additional clutch wear. Stop if the vehicle struggles to disengage or select gears, and arrange recovery if control is unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
