What it means
Clutch A engagement pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum. Risk of harsh engagement and accelerated wear.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A transfers engine torque through the transmission when engaged, and the control module monitors its hydraulic pressure during engagement. This code sets when engagement pressure exceeds the calibrated maximum, which can result from a regulator delivering too much pressure or a control solenoid whose response has drifted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pressure regulator stuck at high output
- Control solenoid characteristic drift
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review commanded and measured clutch A pressure during engagement to confirm the pressure exceeds its expected range.
- Note whether harshness occurs specifically as clutch A engages, and check for related transmission codes that may point to a shared hydraulic or electrical problem.
- Inspect clutch A control solenoid connectors and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage that could affect its command.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since an abnormal hydraulic supply can affect clutch pressure control.
- Test the pressure regulator and clutch A control solenoid response against the manufacturer's specification before considering internal clutch work.
Common fixes
- Correct the fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer's requirements.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring at the clutch A control solenoid.
- Repair or replace a pressure regulator that is stuck at high output.
- Replace or recalibrate the clutch A control solenoid if its response is outside specification.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration because excessive clutch A engagement pressure can produce harsh shifts and accelerate clutch or drivetrain wear. If engagement is severe or the transmission enters limp mode, stop and arrange diagnosis before further use.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
