OBD-II fault code

P2793: Gear Shift Direction Circuit

What it means

The gear-shift direction circuit cannot detect the commanded shift direction (up or down) on an automated manual or sequential transmission.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The gear-shift direction circuit tells an automated manual or sequential transmission controller whether an upshift or downshift is being commanded. P2793 sets when the controller cannot detect the requested direction, which can result from an open sensor circuit, a broken signal wire, or a corroded connector.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open sensor or broken signal wire
  2. Corroded sensor connector

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and transmission codes, then monitor the gear-shift direction reading on a scan tool while commanding upshifts and downshifts as described in the service information.
  2. Inspect the direction sensor connector and harness for corrosion, looseness, damaged insulation, or a broken wire.
  3. Check whether the scan-tool direction status changes correctly with each upshift and downshift command.
  4. Test the sensor and signal-wire continuity according to the manufacturer's circuit procedure to find an open or poor connection.
  5. If the sensor and wiring pass, inspect the transmission controller connector and direction input.

Common fixes

  • Reseat and secure the gear-shift direction sensor connector.
  • Repair a broken or corroded signal-wire connection.
  • Replace the direction sensor if it fails to register upshift and downshift commands.
  • Repair the controller connector or input circuit if testing identifies a fault there.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and repeated manual shifts because the transmission may miss or delay an upshift or downshift. If it slips, shudders, or locks into a limited gear, stop driving and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
