What it means
Voltage on the gear-shift direction line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The gear-shift direction circuit tells an automated manual or sequential transmission controller whether an upshift or downshift is being requested. P2794 sets when the circuit signal voltage is below its expected range, commonly because the signal wire is shorted to ground or the sensor has an internal short.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and monitor the gear-shift direction signal on a scan tool while requesting upshifts and downshifts as specified in the service information.
- Inspect the direction sensor connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, damaged seals, or displaced terminals.
- Move the harness gently while watching the signal to see whether movement changes the low reading.
- Test the signal wire for a short to ground and check sensor operation using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, check the controller connector and input circuit for a low signal.
Common fixes
- Repair a gear-shift direction signal wire shorted to ground.
- Clean or repair corroded or pushed-back connector terminals.
- Replace the direction sensor if it internally pulls the signal low.
- Repair the controller input circuit if testing confirms the fault is there.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently only if upshifts and downshifts remain predictable, and avoid hard acceleration or repeated manual shifting while the signal is low. Stop if shifting becomes erratic, the transmission slips, or it enters limited operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
