What it means
Voltage on the gate-select direction line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The gate-select direction circuit reports which way the selector is moving to an automated manual or sequential transmission controller. P2792 sets when the signal voltage is higher than the expected range, which can result from a short to battery voltage or an open sensor element.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor element
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
- Gear selection may be difficult or inconsistent
- Transmission may enter a limited operating mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch the gate-select direction signal on a scan tool while moving the selector as directed by the vehicle’s service information.
- Inspect the sensor connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, damaged seals, or backed-out terminals.
- Gently move the harness while monitoring the signal to see whether the high reading changes with movement.
- Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage and check the sensor element for an open using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
- If the sensor and harness pass, check the controller connector and direction input for the high signal.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
- Repair corrosion or terminals that are loose or pushed back at the connector.
- Replace the gate-select sensor if its element is open.
- Repair the controller input circuit if tests locate the fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Drive cautiously only if the transmission consistently recognizes selector direction; avoid rapid gear changes because a high signal can make selection difficult or trigger limited operation. Stop if the selected gear is uncertain.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
