OBD-II fault code

P2791: Gate Select Direction Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the gate-select direction line is below the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The gate-select direction circuit reports the direction of selector movement to an automated manual or sequential transmission controller. P2791 sets when the signal voltage falls below the expected range, such as when the signal wire is shorted to ground or the sensor has an internal short.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal short in sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
  • Gear selection may be difficult or inconsistent
  • Transmission may enter a limited operating mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and view the gate-select direction signal on a scan tool while moving the selector as specified in the service information.
  2. Inspect the gate-select sensor connector and harness for chafing, moisture, damaged seals, corrosion, or terminals pushed out of position.
  3. Move the harness gently while monitoring the signal to check for a change associated with a short or poor connection.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to ground and check sensor operation using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
  5. If the sensor and wiring pass, check the controller connector and input circuit for a low signal condition.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire that is shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded or displaced connector terminals.
  • Replace the gate-select sensor if it internally pulls the signal low.
  • Repair the controller input circuit if testing confirms the fault is there.

Can I keep driving?

If gear selection is still reliable, drive cautiously and avoid demanding or rapid shifts until the low signal is diagnosed. Stop if the transmission enters limited operation or cannot consistently identify the selected direction.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
