What it means
Voltage on the gear-shift direction line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The gear-shift direction circuit reports an upshift or downshift request to an automated manual or sequential transmission controller. P2795 sets when its signal voltage is above the expected range, which can happen if the wire is shorted to battery voltage or the sensor element is open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open sensor element
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch the gear-shift direction signal on a scan tool while requesting both upshifts and downshifts as directed by the service information.
- Inspect the direction sensor connector and harness for chafing, moisture, corrosion, damaged seals, or backed-out terminals.
- Gently move the harness while monitoring the signal to see whether the high reading changes with movement.
- Test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage and the sensor element for an open using the manufacturer's circuit procedure.
- If the sensor and wiring pass, inspect the controller connector and direction input for the high signal.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
- Repair loose, corroded, or displaced connector terminals.
- Replace the direction sensor if its element is open.
- Repair the controller input circuit if testing confirms the fault is there.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and manual shifts if the transmission is delaying, missing, or misreading upshift and downshift commands. Stop if it slips badly or enters a limited gear because continued driving can worsen clutch wear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
