What it means
The gate-select direction circuit on an automated manual or sequential transmission cannot detect which direction the selector is being moved.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The gate-select direction circuit tells an automated manual or sequential transmission which way the selector is being moved. P2790 sets when the controller cannot determine that direction from the circuit signal, which can result from an open sensor circuit or a poor sensor connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open sensor or broken signal wire
- Corroded sensor connector
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light may be on
- Gear selection may be difficult or inconsistent
- Transmission may enter a limited operating mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check transmission codes, then use a scan tool to observe gate-select direction while moving the selector as specified by the service information.
- Inspect the gate-select sensor connector and nearby harness for looseness, corrosion, damaged insulation, or a broken wire.
- Check whether the live direction reading changes consistently as the selector moves through its gate positions.
- Test the sensor and signal-wire continuity using the manufacturer's circuit procedure to identify an open sensor or broken wire.
- If the sensor circuit tests correctly, inspect the transmission controller connector and its direction input.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure the gate-select sensor connector.
- Repair corroded terminals or a broken direction signal wire.
- Replace the gate-select sensor if it does not produce a consistent direction signal.
- Repair the controller connector or input circuit if testing identifies a fault there.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only if the selected gear is clear and shifts remain predictable; avoid situations that require rapid gear changes because the transmission may misread selector movement or limit operation. Stop if gear selection becomes unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
