What it means
The TCM detects that pressure control solenoid E is stuck in the de-energised position. The corresponding clutch or band cannot be applied, leading to gear slip or loss of certain gears.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid E controls hydraulic pressure used to apply transmission clutches or bands. P2723 sets when the controller detects that solenoid E is not activating as required, leaving the related hydraulic element unapplied and potentially causing slip or loss of some gears.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid mechanically stuck
- Contaminated transmission fluid
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Slipping or loss of some gears
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for related ratio or gear codes to identify which operating conditions and gears are affected.
- Check fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, looking for contamination that could restrict solenoid movement.
- Inspect solenoid E and its connector for wiring damage, poor terminal contact, and evidence of fluid or debris contamination.
- Use live data to compare the command to solenoid E with actual gear and speed response, checking whether the expected clutch or band applies.
- Test solenoid movement and the associated valve-body passage against the manufacturer's diagnostic specifications before considering internal transmission repair.
Common fixes
- Correct fluid level and address contaminated fluid using the manufacturer's service procedure.
- Repair poor connections or damaged wiring to solenoid E.
- Clean or replace pressure control solenoid E if it is confirmed mechanically stuck.
- Repair the valve body or affected clutch/band if testing shows the hydraulic element still cannot apply.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the transmission slips, loses gears, or is in limp mode; arrange prompt repair and do not tow with the vehicle. Continued slip can quickly overheat the fluid and damage internal components.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
