What it means
Voltage on the pressure control solenoid D control line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Pressure control solenoid D regulates transmission hydraulic pressure in response to commands from the transmission controller. P2721 sets when the controller detects circuit voltage above its expected range, which can happen if the control wire contacts battery voltage or the solenoid coil is open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to B+
- Open solenoid coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may enter limp mode
- Slipping or reduced drive
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related transmission codes to identify when the high-circuit fault occurs.
- Inspect the solenoid D connector and harness for chafing, pin damage, corrosion, or contact with a power wire.
- Monitor the solenoid D circuit while gently moving the harness to see whether the high reading changes with movement.
- Using the wiring diagram, test the control wire for a short to battery voltage and check for an open between the controller and solenoid.
- Test solenoid D coil continuity and controller output against the manufacturer's specification before condemning either part.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged wiring that is shorted to battery voltage or has an open circuit.
- Clean and secure the solenoid D connector; replace damaged or corroded terminals.
- Replace pressure control solenoid D if its coil is open or outside the manufacturer's specification.
- Repair the controller output circuit only after the solenoid and harness pass testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing and demanding acceleration if shifting is harsh, slipping, or reduced, and stop driving if gear engagement becomes unreliable. Continued operation with incorrect pressure control can increase wear and heat.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
