What it means
The engine oil level is reported above the specified limit. The code does not determine why the level is high.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
P252F indicates that engine oil level is reported above the specified limit, based on the vehicle's level sensing system. The control module sets the code when the reported level is too high; the code does not distinguish an overfill from fuel dilution or coolant entering the oil.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Overfilled at last service
- Fuel dilution from incomplete DPF regeneration
- Coolant intrusion (head gasket / cooler)
Symptoms
- Check-engine or oil-level warning light
- Oil level shown above the maximum mark
- Possible rough running or increased exhaust smoke
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and related codes for clues about when the high-level reading occurred and whether regeneration or coolant-related faults are present.
- Park on level ground and verify the oil level by the vehicle's specified dipstick or electronic measurement procedure.
- If the level is above maximum, inspect the oil's appearance and smell for signs of coolant contamination or fuel dilution.
- Review recent oil service and, on a diesel with a DPF, check for frequent or incomplete regeneration and related fault codes.
- If the level is high without a clear overfill, investigate fuel or coolant entry and test the level sensor circuit if the measured oil level is normal.
Common fixes
- Drain or extract excess oil to the specified level after a confirmed overfill.
- Change oil and filter if fuel dilution or contamination is confirmed.
- Repair the cause of repeated incomplete DPF regeneration if it is raising the oil level through fuel dilution.
- Diagnose and repair a coolant leak into the oil, such as a failed gasket or oil cooler, if confirmed.
- Repair or replace the oil-level sensor circuit if the actual level is normal but the reported level remains high.
Can I keep driving?
Verify the level before driving; do not continue driving with oil above maximum, especially if the engine runs roughly or produces smoke. Excess oil or fuel- or coolant-diluted oil can damage the engine, so arrange correction promptly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
