What it means
The engine oil level is below the expected minimum. Check the oil level using the vehicle’s specified procedure and correct it as needed; the code alone does not establish the cause or a torque-reduction response.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The engine oil-level system tells the control module when the oil in the sump falls below its expected minimum. P250F sets for an oil level that is too low; it indicates a level condition, not why the oil is low or whether the engine will reduce power.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- High oil consumption between services
- External oil leak
- Missed top-up since last service
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Low-oil-level warning light or message
- Oil-level reading below minimum
How to diagnose it
- Park on level ground and check the dipstick or electronic level using the vehicle's specified procedure before restarting or driving.
- If the level is low, top up with the specified oil and recheck the level to confirm it is within the allowed range.
- Inspect the engine, oil filter, drain area, and ground beneath the vehicle for visible oil leaks.
- Review service history and monitor the level over subsequent trips to determine whether oil consumption is occurring between services.
- If the measured level is correct but P250F returns, compare the sensor reading and circuit operation with the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Add the specified engine oil until the level is within range.
- Repair a leaking drain plug, filter seal, gasket, or other confirmed leak source.
- Correct an overdue or missed oil top-up and establish regular level checks.
- Repair or replace a faulty oil-level sensing component only if the physical level is correct and testing confirms the fault.
Can I keep driving?
Do not continue driving with the level below the specified minimum; add the correct oil first and check for a leak. Stop the engine if an oil-pressure warning or unusual engine noise occurs, since low oil can quickly damage bearings and other engine parts.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
