OBD-II fault code

P252D: Engine Oil Quality Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The engine oil quality sensor circuit signal is above the expected limit. The code does not identify the cause.

How it works

The engine oil quality sensor sends a signal used for oil-condition or service information. The control module sets P252D when the circuit signal rises above its expected limit; a short to reference or battery voltage, or poor connector contact, can cause this high reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to reference voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Oil quality or service reminder warning may appear
  • Oil-service information may be unavailable or inaccurate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related codes to identify when the oil quality sensor signal was detected high.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, loose pins, or oil contamination that could disrupt the circuit.
  3. Trace the sensor wiring and look for a pinched supply or signal wire contacting a battery-voltage source.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to measure the sensor signal and check for a short to reference or battery voltage against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test the oil quality sensor and its supply and ground circuits where applicable.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose oil quality sensor plug.
  • Clean or repair connector pins with poor contact.
  • Repair wiring shorted to reference or battery voltage.
  • Replace the oil quality sensor if it produces a high signal despite a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

The fault can make oil-quality or service information unavailable or inaccurate, but does not by itself show that the engine has an oil-pressure problem. Check the oil level manually and keep to the normal oil-service schedule.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
