What it means
The engine oil quality sensor circuit signal is intermittent or erratic. The code does not identify the cause.
How it works
The engine oil quality sensor provides an electrical signal used for oil-condition or service information. The control module monitors that circuit for consistency and sets P252E when the signal is intermittent or erratic, which can happen if an oil-contaminated connector or damaged sensor loses contact under vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose oil-soaked connector
- Cracked sensor housing
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Oil quality or service reminder warning may appear intermittently
- Oil-service information may be inconsistent
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and scan-tool codes to see when the signal became erratic and whether the fault recurs with engine vibration.
- Watch the oil quality sensor reading on a scan tool while the engine runs, noting any sudden jumps or dropouts.
- Inspect the connector for looseness, oil contamination, corrosion, or damaged pins.
- Check the sensor housing for cracks and the harness for chafing or strain near the sensor.
- Monitor or test the circuit while gently moving the connector and harness to locate an intermittent contact or wiring break.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose oil quality sensor connector.
- Clean or repair connector contacts affected by oil or corrosion.
- Repair chafed or strained wiring.
- Replace a cracked or internally intermittent oil quality sensor after confirming the circuit is sound.
Can I keep driving?
The fault may make oil-quality or service reminders inconsistent, without necessarily changing how the engine runs. Check oil level manually and follow the regular service schedule while the signal is unreliable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
