OBD-II fault code

P2531: Ignition Switch Run Position Circuit Low

What it means

The ignition switch run-position circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not establish the switch state or resulting behavior.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The ignition switch run-position input signals whether the vehicle's ignition is in the run state. The control module sets P2531 when this input is below its expected limit; a run wire shorted to ground, a stuck switch contact, or resistance at a corroded connector can pull the signal low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Run input wire shorted to ground
  2. Switch contact stuck closed
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or electrical-system warning light
  • Engine may not start or may stall
  • Run-position accessories may not operate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and related codes to determine whether the low run input coincided with a no-start, stall, or accessory fault.
  2. Check whether run-position accessories operate and whether the engine starts or stalls as the key is moved to run.
  3. Inspect the ignition switch connector and run-input wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or a wire rubbed through to ground.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to measure the run input in each switch position and check for a short to ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. Test the switch contacts and connector voltage drop to distinguish a stuck contact from wiring or high-resistance connection.

Common fixes

  • Repair a run-input wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or replace corroded ignition switch connector terminals.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a loose connection in the run circuit.
  • Replace the ignition switch if its run contact is stuck or fails testing.

Can I keep driving?

Because the low run signal can prevent starting or cause a stall, avoid driving if the engine cuts out or run-position accessories fail. A stall in traffic can create a hazard, so address recurring symptoms promptly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
