OBD-II fault code

P252C: Engine Oil Quality Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The engine oil quality sensor circuit signal is below the expected limit. The code does not identify the cause.

How it works

The engine oil quality sensor sends a signal used for oil-condition or service information. The control module sets P252C when that circuit's signal falls below its expected limit, which can result from a signal wire grounded or poor contact at a corroded connector; the code does not by itself identify the failed part.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Oil quality or service reminder warning may appear
  • Oil-service information may be unavailable or inaccurate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related codes to confirm the fault concerns a low oil quality sensor signal rather than an oil-level or pressure warning.
  2. Check the oil level and inspect the oil quality sensor connector for corrosion, loose pins, or oil contamination.
  3. Inspect the signal-wire route for chafing or insulation worn through where it could contact ground.
  4. Using the wiring diagram, measure the sensor signal and check for an unintended short to ground against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the signal wire and connector test correctly, test the sensor itself and its supply and ground circuits where applicable.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose oil quality sensor connector.
  • Clean or repair corroded connector pins.
  • Repair insulation damage or a signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace the oil quality sensor if its output remains low with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

This code can make oil-quality or service information unavailable or inaccurate, while not necessarily affecting engine operation. Check the oil level manually and follow the normal service schedule until repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
