OBD-II fault code

P252B: Engine Oil Quality Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The engine oil quality sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected. The code alone does not identify the sensor, circuit, or oil-related cause.

How it works

The engine oil quality sensor sends a signal that the vehicle uses to assess oil condition or service information. The control module compares that signal with expected behavior and sets P252B when it is outside the calibrated range or does not respond as expected; the code alone cannot tell whether the cause is the oil, sensor, or circuit.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Contaminated sensor electrode
  2. Oil grade outside the sensor calibration range
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Oil quality or service reminder warning may appear
  • Oil-service information may be inaccurate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and oil-service history to check when the range/performance fault appeared and what oil was installed.
  2. Check the dipstick or electronic level display, and verify the oil grade and specification against the vehicle requirements.
  3. Inspect the oil quality sensor electrode or sensor area, if accessible, for contamination and check the connector for corrosion or oil intrusion.
  4. Read the sensor data on a scan tool and compare its response with the manufacturer's specification and the actual oil condition.
  5. Test the sensor wiring and connections for faults before condemning an aged or contaminated sensor.

Common fixes

  • Correct the oil grade if it does not meet the vehicle specification.
  • Change overdue or contaminated oil and filter using the specified oil.
  • Clean the sensor electrode only if the manufacturer's service information permits it.
  • Repair faulty sensor wiring or connections.
  • Replace the oil quality sensor if its response remains out of range after the oil and circuit are verified.

Can I keep driving?

If the oil level and pressure are normal and no other warning is present, the engine may remain drivable, but oil-service information can be inaccurate. Keep to the scheduled oil-change interval until the sensor system is repaired.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
