What it means
The engine oil level sensor circuit signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected. The code does not establish that the sender itself is faulty.
How it works
The engine oil level sensor reports sump oil level to the control module, which checks whether the signal changes and stays within the expected operating range. P250B sets when that signal is out of range or does not respond as expected; it does not by itself prove the sensor has failed.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Aged or contaminated sender
- Foaming oil under high RPM masking the level
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Oil-level warning light or message
- Oil-level reading may be inaccurate or fluctuate
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and live oil-level readings for when the signal became implausible, especially after high-RPM operation when foaming can affect the reading.
- Park on level ground and check the oil using the vehicle's specified procedure to rule out an actual low level affecting the sensor reading.
- Inspect the oil-level sender, its connector, and nearby wiring for contamination, damage, or loose connections.
- Compare the scan-tool oil-level value with the physical oil level through the operating conditions described in the service information.
- Test the sender signal and circuit response against the manufacturer's specification before replacing the sender.
Common fixes
- Correct the oil level if it is outside the specified range.
- Repair a loose or contaminated sender connector and clean its contacts as appropriate.
- Repair damaged wiring to the oil-level sender.
- Replace an aged or out-of-calibration oil-level sender if circuit tests confirm it is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
If the oil level checks correctly and there are no oil-pressure warnings or unusual engine noises, short trips may be reasonable, but check the level manually before driving. Stop the engine if the level is low or an oil-pressure warning appears, since inadequate lubrication can cause severe engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
