What it means
A fault is detected in the engine oil level sensor circuit. The code does not establish which oil-level warning or service feature the vehicle uses.
How it works
The engine oil level sensor reports oil-level information through a circuit connected to the engine control system or instrument display. P250A indicates a fault in that circuit, so the oil-level warning or reading may be unavailable or unreliable; it does not by itself confirm that the engine is low on oil.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open or shorted wiring to the sensor
- Corroded connector at the oil pan
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Oil-level warning light or message
- Oil-level reading may be missing or erratic
How to diagnose it
- Check the oil level using the vehicle's dipstick or specified manual method before relying on the electronic reading.
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related sensor or circuit codes that may help identify when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the oil-level sensor connector, usually near the oil pan, and its wiring for corrosion, oil contamination, damage, or loose pins.
- Use the wiring diagram to check the sensor circuit for an open or short and verify its power and ground where applicable.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test the oil-level sensor signal against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Correct the oil level if a manual check shows it is low, using the specified oil.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose oil-level sensor connector pins.
- Repair damaged or open wiring at the oil-level sensor.
- Replace the oil-level sensor if circuit tests confirm it has failed.
Can I keep driving?
Check the oil level manually and do not treat a missing or erratic sensor reading as proof that the oil level is safe. If the oil-pressure warning appears or the engine makes unusual noises, stop the engine promptly to reduce the risk of damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
