What it means
The ECU detects sporadic interruptions of its supply voltage. The fault is set when supply drops below a threshold for short periods, often during cranking or due to a poor connection.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The ECM or PCM needs a steady supply from the battery to keep the engine running and retain control of its systems. P2509 sets when that supply is interrupted briefly or repeatedly, often during cranking or when a loose connection or relay loses contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Poor battery cable connection
- Intermittent main relay
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Intermittent stalling or no-start
- Dashboard or warning lights may flicker
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check whether the interruption coincided with cranking, a stall, or flickering dashboard lights.
- Inspect and secure both battery cable connections, the main relay connector, and ECM/PCM power-feed connectors; look for corrosion or loose pins.
- Check battery condition and monitor module supply voltage during cranking and while gently moving suspect harness sections.
- Test the main relay and check voltage drop across the battery cables, relay contacts, and module grounds under load.
- If the supply remains intermittent, inspect the wiring and connector pins for vibration-sensitive breaks or poor contact.
Common fixes
- Clean and tighten loose or corroded battery cable connections.
- Repair loose or damaged ECM/PCM power-feed connector pins.
- Replace an intermittent main relay.
- Repair wiring with a broken conductor or poor contact.
Can I keep driving?
Do not rely on the vehicle for a trip if it has stalled or lost power unexpectedly; the interruption can recur without warning. If dashboard lights flicker, move to a safe place and have the supply fault checked.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
