What it means
The engine oil level sensor circuit signal is below the expected range. The code does not identify the cause or how the vehicle handles an invalid reading.
How it works
The engine oil-level sender sends a signal to the control module so it can estimate the oil in the sump. P250C sets when the sender circuit signal falls below its expected range, which can result from a grounded signal wire, a sender fault, or poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Sender shorted internally
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Oil-level warning light or message
- Oil-level reading may be missing or implausible
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live oil-level data to see whether the signal is consistently low or drops under particular conditions.
- Check the oil level on level ground using the vehicle's specified procedure, because the circuit fault may make the displayed reading unreliable.
- Inspect the sender connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, or a signal wire contacting ground.
- With the circuit diagram, check the signal wire for a short to ground and inspect connector pin fit and continuity.
- Test the sender output and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish an internally shorted sender from a wiring fault.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded sender connector terminals and restore secure pin contact.
- Repair a signal wire that is shorted to ground or has damaged insulation.
- Replace the oil-level sender if testing confirms an internal short.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection found during circuit testing.
Can I keep driving?
The fault can hide a genuinely low oil level, so check the oil manually before driving and keep trips short until the reading is trustworthy. Stop if the level is below the specified minimum or an oil-pressure warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
