What it means
The module detects a voltage or signal above the expected range in the particulate filter pressure sensor B circuit. It sets the code when the circuit input remains higher than its calibrated threshold.
How it works
Particulate filter pressure sensor B measures pressure in the filter's sensing circuit so the module can assess exhaust flow through the DPF. P2461 sets when the sensor B circuit input stays above the module's calibrated range, which can come from an electrical fault or a problem affecting the pressure signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open circuit or poor connection
- Faulty pressure sensor
- Short to voltage in wiring
- Blocked or damaged pressure hoses
- Poor sensor ground
Symptoms
- Check engine light
- DPF warning
- Reduced engine power
- More frequent regeneration
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare sensor B pressure readings with engine speed and load to see when the high input occurs.
- With the engine off, inspect sensor B's connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or contact with a voltage source.
- Check the sensor B pressure hoses for blockage, cracks, kinks, or incorrect routing, since a faulty pressure path can distort the reading.
- Use live data while inspecting or gently moving the harness to see whether the sensor B signal changes or remains abnormally high.
- Test the sensor B signal, supply, and ground circuits for an open, short to voltage, or poor ground, following the manufacturer's wiring information.
- If wiring and hoses are sound, compare sensor B output with the manufacturer's specification and replace the sensor if it fails.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the sensor B connector; clean corroded terminals where appropriate.
- Repair damaged wiring or restore a poor sensor ground.
- Clear a blockage or replace a cracked or damaged sensor B pressure hose.
- Replace particulate filter pressure sensor B if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive gently if the vehicle has normal power, but a DPF warning or reduced power means you should limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon. Incorrect pressure feedback can interfere with regeneration and lead to greater filter restriction.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
