What it means
The DPF differential-pressure sensor delivers an intermittent signal — usually a marginal connector or a chafed wiring section that breaks contact during temperature or vibration.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
DPF pressure Sensor A measures pressure difference across the filter to help the engine control module estimate soot loading and manage regeneration. P2456 sets when Sensor A's electrical signal becomes intermittent or erratic rather than remaining stable enough for those calculations.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Connector intermittent
- Wiring chafed against bracket
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light or DPF warning light on
- Power loss / limp mode
- Increased fuel consumption
- Failed forced regeneration attempts
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and fault history for changes in Sensor A's reading that coincide with vibration, temperature, or engine operation.
- Inspect Sensor A's connector for loose pins, corrosion, or a poor fit, and check the harness for chafing against brackets or hot components.
- With live Sensor A data displayed, gently move the accessible harness sections to see whether the reading drops out or jumps.
- Inspect Sensor A's pressure hoses for loose connections, cracks, or blockage that could cause unstable pressure readings.
- If the wiring and hoses are sound but the signal still fluctuates, test Sensor A using the manufacturer's procedure and replace it if it fails.
Common fixes
- Secure the harness away from vibration, sharp edges, or hot components.
- Repair chafed or broken Sensor A wiring and ensure the connector locks firmly.
- Clean corroded connector contacts or replace a damaged connector.
- Reconnect or replace a cracked or blocked Sensor A pressure hose.
- Replace DPF pressure Sensor A if it produces an intermittent signal despite sound wiring and hoses.
Can I keep driving?
Arrange diagnosis soon because intermittent Sensor A readings can disrupt soot-load estimates and regeneration. If a DPF warning, power loss, or repeated regeneration failure occurs, limit driving to reduce the chance of worsening soot buildup.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
