OBD-II fault code

P2458: DPF Regeneration Duration

What it means

The DPF regeneration cycle takes longer than the calibrated maximum. The ECU sets this code when the soot load is not being burned off within the expected window — common after many short trips or with degraded post-injection.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps soot and periodically burns it off during regeneration. The control module tracks how long regeneration takes, and sets P2458 when a regeneration cycle exceeds its calibrated time limit, often because soot is not burning off effectively.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Heavy soot load, short trips
  2. Post-injection insufficient

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or DPF warning light on
  • Power loss / limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed forced regeneration attempts

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan soot load, regeneration status, exhaust temperatures, and any related DPF or injection codes before attempting a regeneration.
  2. Review recent driving conditions and check whether repeated short trips have interrupted DPF regeneration.
  3. Inspect the DPF pressure-sensor hoses and exhaust for restrictions, leaks, disconnections, or damage that could distort soot-load estimates.
  4. Check whether exhaust-temperature sensors report plausible readings during warm-up and regeneration, and inspect their wiring and connectors.
  5. If the readings support it, assess post-injection operation and DPF restriction using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure before attempting another regeneration.

Common fixes

  • Correct sensor-hose leaks, disconnections, or wiring faults that interfere with regeneration monitoring.
  • Repair a fault preventing the engine from reaching the temperatures needed for regeneration.
  • Repair inadequate post-injection operation after confirming the cause.
  • Perform a manufacturer-approved regeneration if soot load and filter condition allow it.
  • Clean or replace a DPF that remains restricted after the underlying fault is repaired.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration if power is reduced or the DPF warning is on. Continued failed regeneration can raise soot loading until the vehicle limits power or the filter requires cleaning or replacement.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
