OBD-II fault code

P2453: Diesel Particulate Filter Pressure Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The DPF differential-pressure sensor produces a value that is electrically valid but does not match expectations — for example a non-zero reading with engine off or no change between idle and load.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

DPF pressure Sensor A measures the pressure difference across the filter, giving the engine control module information about exhaust restriction and soot loading. P2453 sets when the signal is electrically plausible but its pressure behavior does not match what the module expects, such as failing to change appropriately with engine operation.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sample hoses clogged or kinked
  2. Sensor drift
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or DPF warning light on
  • Power loss / limp mode
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Failed forced regeneration attempts

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A's pressure reading with engine speed and load when the fault set.
  2. With the engine off, check whether Sensor A reports a plausible near-zero pressure difference and compare it with the manufacturer's expected behavior.
  3. Inspect both Sensor A sample hoses for soot blockage, kinks, leaks, or incorrect routing.
  4. Check the Sensor A connector and wiring for damage or intermittent contact, then inspect the live reading at idle and under a controlled change in engine load.
  5. If the hoses and wiring are clear and sound but the pressure signal remains out of range or unresponsive, test Sensor A against the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or replace a kinked, cracked, or incorrectly routed Sensor A hose.
  • Clear a blocked Sensor A sample hose using the manufacturer's procedure.
  • Repair a loose or damaged Sensor A connector or wiring.
  • Replace DPF pressure Sensor A if it drifts or fails the specified response test.

Can I keep driving?

Have the fault diagnosed soon because inaccurate Sensor A readings can disrupt soot-load estimates and regeneration. Limit driving if a DPF warning or power loss develops, since continued use can lead to greater soot buildup.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
