What it means
The control module detects a fault in the EGR sensor E circuit. The sensor’s function and location depend on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR sensor E reports a position or operating value for part of the exhaust gas recirculation system; its exact role varies by vehicle. The control module checks the sensor’s signal, supply, and ground for continuity and sets P2385 when it detects a fault in that circuit.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in sensor signal, supply or ground
- Connector corroded or contaminated
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check EGR sensor E live data for dropouts or a missing reading to see how the fault appeared.
- Locate sensor E using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and wiring for corrosion, contamination, damage, or a disconnected plug.
- Check the sensor circuit’s signal, supply, and ground for opens, using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- Check connector terminals for poor contact and verify continuity through each wire between the sensor and control module.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test sensor E and its EGR-related operation using the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the sensor E connector.
- Clean corroded or contaminated connector terminals and repair damaged seals as appropriate.
- Repair an open or damaged signal, supply, or ground wire.
- Replace sensor E if it fails the manufacturer’s test.
Can I keep driving?
You may be able to drive gently if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid heavy loads because faulty EGR feedback can contribute to knocking, hesitation, or increased NOx emissions. Stop if power loss or rough running becomes severe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
