What it means
The control module monitors the EGR sensor E signal for continuity. It sets this code when the signal drops out or changes erratically during operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR sensor E provides feedback about part of the exhaust gas recirculation system, with its exact role depending on the vehicle. P2389 sets when the control module sees the sensor E signal drop out or change erratically during operation, often from a connection or wire that loses contact with vibration.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and monitor sensor E live data to see whether the signal drops out as the fault occurs.
- Locate sensor E using vehicle service information and inspect its connector for loose fit, corrosion, contamination, or damaged pins.
- Inspect the harness route for chafing or contact with a vibrating component, then gently move the harness while watching the live signal.
- Check continuity and terminal contact in the signal, supply, and ground circuits while flexing the harness, following the wiring diagram.
- If the circuit remains stable, test sensor E and its EGR-related response using the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor E connector and restore proper terminal contact.
- Clean corrosion or contamination from the connector and repair damaged seals.
- Repair chafed wiring and secure the harness away from vibrating or hot components.
- Replace sensor E if it produces intermittent output despite a sound circuit.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, drive gently and avoid heavy loads, especially if the signal dropout brings on knocking or hesitation. Stop if power loss or rough running becomes pronounced, since unstable EGR feedback can worsen drivability and emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
