OBD-II fault code

P2381: EGR Sensor D Circuit High

What it means

The control module detects a high signal in the EGR sensor D circuit. The code identifies the circuit condition; the sensor’s function and the resulting EGR response depend on the vehicle.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR sensor D sends a signal used by the control module to assess an EGR-related condition; the sensor's exact function varies by vehicle. The module monitors that circuit's signal level. This code sets when the signal is higher than expected, which can occur if the signal wire contacts a supply or the sensor ground is open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal line shorted to supply
  2. Sensor ground open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review EGR sensor D live data alongside related EGR readings to see when the signal goes high.
  2. Locate sensor D using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or a wire touching a power source.
  3. Check sensor D's ground connection and signal circuit against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specifications.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to supply and verify that the sensor ground has continuity using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the circuit and ground pass, test sensor D itself before considering replacement.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire shorted to a supply.
  • Restore the sensor D ground connection if it is open or loose.
  • Replace corroded or poorly seated connector terminals.
  • Replace EGR sensor D if it fails the specified signal test.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration or engine loads if pinging, knocking, hesitation, or power loss occurs; continued driving under load can worsen those symptoms. Arrange diagnosis soon because EGR control and NOx emissions may be affected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
