OBD-II fault code

P044A: EGR Sensor C Circuit

What it means

EGR Sensor C Circuit: an electrical fault is present in the circuit. Without valid EGR feedback the ECU disables exhaust gas recirculation and may set further EGR codes.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR Sensor C provides feedback about the exhaust-gas-recirculation system to the ECU, which uses that signal to monitor EGR operation. P044A indicates an electrical fault in Sensor C’s circuit, so the ECU may disable EGR control and set additional EGR codes.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. EGR sensor C failure
  2. Open or short in the sensor wiring
  3. Corroded or loose connector
  4. Fault in the control module

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other EGR codes to see what operating conditions accompanied the Sensor C circuit fault.
  2. Locate EGR Sensor C using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check the Sensor C circuit for an open or short and verify its supply and ground according to the manufacturer's procedure.
  4. Compare Sensor C live data with commanded EGR operation and other available EGR feedback to see whether the signal is missing.
  5. If wiring and connections test correctly, test Sensor C and then the ECU input using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair a loose or corroded Sensor C connector.
  • Repair an open or short in the Sensor C wiring.
  • Replace EGR Sensor C if it fails its circuit test.
  • Repair a confirmed ECU input fault.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration or sustained high loads if the engine pings, hesitates, or loses power, since failed EGR feedback can raise combustion temperatures. Arrange diagnosis soon; continued knocking can damage the engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
