What it means
The control module detects a high signal in the EGR sensor E circuit. The sensor’s function and the resulting EGR response depend on the vehicle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR sensor E provides feedback about part of the exhaust gas recirculation system, though its exact function varies by vehicle. P2386 means the control module sees the sensor E signal above its expected electrical range, which can happen if the signal is pulled toward the supply voltage.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal line shorted to supply
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Supply wire pinched against B+ source
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch sensor E live data to confirm whether the reading is stuck high.
- Identify sensor E from vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or wiring pinched against a power source.
- With the wiring diagram, check whether the signal wire is shorted to the sensor supply or another power feed.
- Check the connector terminals and measure signal, supply, and ground circuits against the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor E and its EGR-related movement or response using the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire shorted to a supply or power feed.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Repair wiring pinched or damaged near a power source.
- Replace sensor E if it fails the manufacturer’s test.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs normally, a short, gentle trip may be possible, but avoid hard acceleration or heavy loads that bring on knocking or hesitation. Continued driving with incorrect EGR feedback can increase NOx emissions and worsen drivability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
