What it means
Cylinder 9 measured peak combustion pressure is below the calibrated minimum — typically low compression, weak injection, or stuck-open exhaust valve.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
On an engine with cylinder-pressure monitoring, the system measures the combustion pressure peak for cylinder 9. This code sets when that peak falls below the calibrated minimum, pointing to weak compression, insufficient fuel delivery, or another cause of low cylinder 9 combustion pressure.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Low compression on cylinder 9 (valves, rings, head gasket)
- Injector flow too low
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough running or misfire
- Reduced engine power
- Poor acceleration
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare cylinder 9 pressure and misfire data with other cylinders at the recorded engine speed and load.
- Check for air, fuel, or engine faults that coincide with weak cylinder 9 combustion, and inspect the cylinder 9 injector connector and wiring.
- Review cylinder 9 pressure data under the manufacturer's specified test conditions to confirm the low reading is repeatable.
- Test cylinder 9 compression and, if low, perform the manufacturer's leak-down or equivalent mechanical checks to identify valve, ring, or head-gasket leakage.
- Test cylinder 9 injector operation and delivery using the manufacturer's procedure if mechanical compression is adequate.
Common fixes
- Repair a confirmed cylinder 9 injector wiring or connection fault.
- Service or replace a cylinder 9 injector shown to be delivering insufficient fuel.
- Repair a leaking cylinder 9 valve or other confirmed compression fault.
- Repair a confirmed cylinder 9 ring or head-gasket problem.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid heavy loads and long trips if cylinder 9 is misfiring or power is reduced; continued misfire can raise emissions and may damage the exhaust aftertreatment system. Stop if the engine runs very roughly or loses significant power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
