OBD-II fault code

P039A: Cylinder 1 Pressure Too Low

What it means

Cylinder 1 measured peak combustion pressure is below the calibrated minimum — typically low compression, weak injection, or stuck-open exhaust valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module evaluates the combustion-pressure trace for cylinder 1 to check how effectively that cylinder builds pressure. This code sets when cylinder 1's measured peak pressure falls below the module's calibrated minimum, which can point to a sealing problem or weak fuel delivery to that cylinder.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Low compression in cylinder 1
  2. Leaking or poorly seated valves
  3. Worn piston rings or cylinder damage
  4. Weak or faulty fuel injector

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine misfire
  • Reduced power
  • Increased fuel use

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 1 misfire and pressure readings to see when the low-pressure fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the cylinder 1 wiring and connector, then compare its pressure-sensor signal with the other cylinders under the same conditions.
  3. Check cylinder 1 fueling, including injector operation and related wiring, because weak delivery can reduce combustion pressure.
  4. Perform a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 1 and compare the result with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If compression is low, investigate cylinder 1 valves, piston rings, and cylinder condition to locate the leak.

Common fixes

  • Repair a poor connection or damaged wiring at the cylinder 1 injector or pressure sensor.
  • Clean or replace the cylinder 1 injector if testing confirms weak or uneven delivery.
  • Repair leaking or poorly seated cylinder 1 valves.
  • Repair worn piston rings or cylinder damage if compression testing confirms an internal leak.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if the engine misfires, runs roughly, or has reduced power; avoid heavy loads. Continued misfire can increase emissions, waste fuel, and damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
