What it means
The barometric pressure sensor delivers an electrically valid signal that does not match the operating point — for example pressure jumps that do not match altitude changes, or values stuck near full scale.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Barometric Pressure Sensor A reports atmospheric pressure for altitude compensation and engine air-fuel calculations. P2227 sets when its signal is electrically plausible but does not track expected pressure conditions, such as remaining stuck or changing implausibly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor drift
- Connector corroded
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Reduced engine performance
- Increased fuel consumption
- Unsteady idle or hesitation
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A's reported pressure with local atmospheric pressure and other available pressure readings.
- With the engine off, check whether Sensor A's reading is plausible and stable, then watch whether it responds appropriately during operating changes specified by the manufacturer.
- Inspect the Sensor A connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or damage that could distort an otherwise valid signal.
- Check terminal contact and signal continuity, and look for an unstable reading while gently moving the harness.
- If the circuit is sound, test Sensor A for drift or slow response against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose Sensor A connector.
- Repair damaged wiring or terminals causing an unstable pressure signal.
- Secure a loose sensor mounting if it affects the reading.
- Replace Barometric Pressure Sensor A if its output is stuck, slow, or outside the manufacturer's calibration limits.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive cautiously if the engine runs smoothly, but reduced performance, hesitation, and increased fuel use may occur. Avoid hard acceleration if it hesitates and arrange diagnosis so incorrect altitude compensation does not persist.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
