OBD-II fault code

P222D: Barometric Pressure Sensor B Circuit High

What it means

Barometric sensor B above upper plausibility — open signal or short to B+. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Barometric Pressure Sensor B reports ambient air pressure so the engine controller can adjust fueling and engine load calculations for altitude and weather. The controller sets P222D when Sensor B's signal is implausibly high, which can happen if its signal circuit is open or connected to battery voltage.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open signal line
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare Sensor B's live pressure reading with Sensor A and the expected local barometric pressure to confirm the high reading.
  2. Inspect Sensor B's connector and harness for corrosion, moisture, pushed-back pins, chafing, or contact with a power wire.
  3. With the code active, gently move the Sensor B harness while watching its live reading to see whether the fault changes.
  4. Check Sensor B's signal, reference, and ground circuits for opens, unwanted voltage, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring information.
  5. If the wiring and connector pass, test Sensor B and its pressure port, if fitted, against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Sensor B connector terminals.
  • Repair an open or chafed Sensor B signal wire.
  • Repair wiring shorted to a battery supply.
  • Replace Sensor B if its output remains implausibly high with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

A short, gentle trip may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid hard acceleration and long journeys because incorrect pressure data can impair fueling and increase fuel use and emissions. Stop if power loss or rough running becomes severe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
