OBD-II fault code

P2229: Barometric Pressure Sensor A Circuit High

What it means

The barometric pressure sensor reports a voltage above the valid window. Usually a short to supply or an open ground.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Barometric Pressure Sensor A measures atmospheric pressure for the engine control module's altitude compensation. P2229 sets when its signal rises above the valid range, which can happen if the signal is shorted to supply or the sensor ground is open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Sensor ground open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Hesitation or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare Sensor A's pressure reading with local atmospheric conditions and other available pressure readings.
  2. Inspect the Sensor A connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, or a signal wire contacting a power source.
  3. Using vehicle wiring information, check for a short to supply on the Sensor A signal line and verify the sensor ground is intact.
  4. Check connector pin fit, ground continuity, and signal wiring continuity against the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test Barometric Pressure Sensor A and its output against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose Sensor A connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to supply or otherwise damaged.
  • Restore an open or poor Sensor A ground connection.
  • Replace Barometric Pressure Sensor A if its signal remains above range with verified wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, cautious driving is usually possible, though performance, fuel use, or idle quality may suffer. Avoid hard acceleration if it hesitates and have the high signal diagnosed before relying on normal engine response.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
