OBD-II fault code

P2226: Barometric Pressure Sensor A Circuit

What it means

The ECU detects a general fault in the barometric pressure sensor circuit. The atmospheric pressure value used for altitude compensation and fuel/air calculation is not available or implausible.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Barometric Pressure Sensor A measures atmospheric pressure so the engine control module can account for altitude when managing air and fuel. P2226 sets when the module detects a general electrical fault in Sensor A's circuit and cannot rely on a valid pressure signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Defective barometric pressure sensor
  2. Wiring fault to BPS

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Poor acceleration or reduced engine performance
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Hard starting or rough running

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare the scan-tool barometric pressure reading with local atmospheric conditions and other available pressure readings.
  2. Inspect Sensor A and its connector for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or wiring pulled or rubbed through.
  3. Use vehicle wiring information to check Sensor A's power, ground, and signal circuits for opens or shorts.
  4. Check connector pin fit and circuit continuity, then compare sensor output with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If power, ground, wiring, and connections are sound, test or replace Barometric Pressure Sensor A as indicated by the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect Sensor A's loose connector or clean corroded terminals.
  • Repair damaged or open wiring in the Sensor A circuit.
  • Restore a poor sensor ground or power connection.
  • Replace Barometric Pressure Sensor A if its output fails the manufacturer's test.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, cautious driving is generally possible, but reduced performance, rough running, or higher fuel use may continue. Avoid demanding acceleration if the engine hesitates, and have the pressure signal checked before relying on normal engine performance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
