OBD-II fault code

P2204: NOx Sensor Circuit Intermittent (Bank 1)

What it means

The bank 1 NOx sensor circuit fault is intermittent. The code does not identify the location or cause of the interruption.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 NOx sensor circuit carries exhaust nitrogen oxide readings to the control module. P2204 means the fault comes and goes rather than remaining continuously present, so a loose connection, changing harness fault, or intermittent sensor failure may be involved.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Loose or intermittent connector
  2. Intermittent wiring fault
  3. Intermittent sensor fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Check stored and pending codes and freeze-frame records for the conditions when the bank 1 circuit fault occurred, including whether it returns after vibration or heat.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 NOx sensor connector and harness along their full accessible route for loose locking tabs, chafing, heat damage, or corrosion.
  3. With live data monitored, gently move the harness and connector using the manufacturer’s approved procedure to see whether the bank 1 signal drops out.
  4. Check continuity and terminal fit while flexing suspect harness sections, then verify power, ground, and communication circuits against the wiring diagram.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test the bank 1 NOx sensor and its control electronics for intermittent failure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose bank 1 NOx sensor connector and restore its locking tab if serviceable.
  • Repair an intermittently open or chafed section of bank 1 wiring.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace the bank 1 NOx sensor assembly if the signal drops out with wiring and connections verified.

Can I keep driving?

Drive only as needed if the vehicle behaves normally, and monitor for a NOx or DEF warning because an intermittent fault can become continuous. A restart countdown on the display needs prompt attention.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
