OBD-II fault code

P2200: NOx Sensor Circuit (Bank 1)

What it means

The control module detected a general fault in the bank 1 NOx sensor circuit. The code alone does not identify a communication failure, sensor location relative to the catalyst, or a specific cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The NOx sensor system measures nitrogen oxides in the exhaust, and the control module monitors the electrical circuit serving the bank 1 sensor. P2200 indicates a general bank 1 NOx sensor circuit fault, without specifying whether the sensor, wiring, or connection failed.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. NOx sensor failed
  2. Sensor wiring or CAN harness open

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for related emissions and aftertreatment codes and record freeze-frame data, since those may help identify when the bank 1 circuit fault appeared.
  2. Locate the bank 1 NOx sensor using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for heat damage, corrosion, abrasion, or an open connection.
  3. Check the sensor circuit power, ground, and communication wiring using the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and test procedure.
  4. If wiring and connections pass, test the bank 1 NOx sensor and its control electronics as directed by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose bank 1 NOx sensor connector.
  • Repair an open or heat-damaged section of the bank 1 NOx sensor harness.
  • Clean or repair corroded terminals if the connector can be serviced.
  • Replace the bank 1 NOx sensor assembly if circuit tests confirm it has failed.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive cautiously if the vehicle runs normally, but emissions control may be impaired and a DEF warning or restart countdown may follow. Check the dashboard warnings promptly and do not ignore any countdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
