OBD-II fault code

P2201: NOx Sensor Range/Performance (Bank 1)

What it means

The bank 1 NOx sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected. The code does not identify contamination or sensor aging as the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The bank 1 NOx sensor reports nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust for emissions control. The module sets P2201 when that sensor’s signal falls outside the expected operating range or responds incorrectly; this is a performance finding, not a specific circuit-low or circuit-high diagnosis.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. NOx sensor aged — slow response
  2. Sensor element contaminated
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan for related NOx, DEF, and aftertreatment codes and use freeze-frame data to note the conditions when bank 1 sensor performance was judged abnormal.
  2. Inspect the bank 1 NOx sensor and harness for exhaust heat damage, contamination, loose connections, or corrosion that could affect its response.
  3. Review live NOx sensor data through warm-up and changing engine conditions, comparing it with other available exhaust and aftertreatment data for plausibility.
  4. Check for exhaust leaks or aftertreatment faults that could make the bank 1 reading inconsistent with actual exhaust conditions.
  5. If the surrounding system and wiring check out, test the bank 1 sensor response using the manufacturer’s procedure before replacing it.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or heat-damaged bank 1 sensor connection or harness.
  • Repair an exhaust leak that is affecting the sensor’s measurement.
  • Correct any confirmed aftertreatment fault contributing to implausible NOx readings.
  • Replace the aged or contaminated bank 1 NOx sensor if its response fails the specified test.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine operates normally, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon because emissions performance may be reduced. A DEF warning or restart countdown can occur on some vehicles, so follow dashboard instructions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
