OBD-II fault code

P2213: NOx Sensor Circuit (Bank 2)

What it means

The control module monitors the NOx sensor circuit for bank 2 and sets this code when it detects an electrical fault or an invalid circuit signal. The code identifies the circuit fault but does not by itself identify the failed component.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The NOx sensor circuit for bank 2 carries sensor information used by the emissions control system to manage NOx reduction. P2213 sets when the module detects an electrical fault or invalid signal in that bank 2 circuit; it does not identify the sensor as the cause by itself.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty NOx sensor
  2. Damaged or corroded wiring or connector
  3. Poor power or ground connection
  4. Fault in the control module circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light or NOx warning on
  • AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
  • Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check live NOx readings and sensor status for bank 2 to determine whether the fault is present continuously or under specific conditions.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 NOx sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check the bank 2 sensor's power and ground connections using the wiring diagram and compare them with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test continuity and check for shorts in the bank 2 signal wiring, isolating the sensor and module as directed by the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring, power, and ground are correct, test the bank 2 NOx sensor and then the relevant module circuit.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair a corroded or loose bank 2 sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged bank 2 NOx sensor wiring or restore its power or ground connection.
  • Replace the bank 2 NOx sensor if it fails the specified circuit or signal tests.
  • Repair the module circuit only if testing confirms a module-side fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle runs normally, you may be able to drive a short distance, but the emissions system may not control or monitor NOx correctly. Avoid extended driving and respond promptly to any AdBlue/DEF warning or start countdown.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
