What it means
NOx sensor on bank 2 reads in range but plausibility check fails — slow response, drift, or value does not match the model expectation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 NOx sensor measures nitrogen oxides in the exhaust so the emissions system can assess NOx reduction. P2214 sets when the signal is present but its range, response, or plausibility does not match what the module expects.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor drift
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare live bank 2 NOx readings with engine and emissions operating conditions to identify when plausibility fails.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor mounting for looseness and check its connector and nearby wiring for corrosion, heat damage, or strain.
- Check whether the bank 2 reading responds appropriately during changing engine load and compare it with the other bank where applicable.
- Verify sensor power, ground, and signal circuits against the wiring diagram and the manufacturer's specification.
- If the mounting and circuits are sound, test the bank 2 NOx sensor for slow response or drift using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose bank 2 sensor mounting.
- Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact at the bank 2 NOx sensor.
- Replace the bank 2 NOx sensor if its response or accuracy is outside specification.
- Correct a confirmed emissions system condition that is making the bank 2 reading implausible.
Can I keep driving?
A normally running vehicle may be driven briefly, but inaccurate bank 2 NOx data can impair emissions control and lead to an AdBlue/DEF warning or start countdown. Avoid extended trips and emissions testing until the fault is resolved.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
